How do I go about starting to walk for weight loss?

There are a few bike/walking trails around my area and I would like to, as the weather warms up, start to walk for weight loss and fun. What is the best way to start this so that I don’t go too far and get tired, then have to walk back? How can I prevent blisters? What type of shoes and clothes should I wear? I’m overweight and really want to get healthy.

Thanks in advance!
